Create a Stunning “Thankful” Door Hanger with Foil Transfer
In this beginner-friendly tutorial, Jenn shows you how to turn a simple “thankful” wooden cutout (like the ones from Hobby Lobby) into a gorgeous fall door hanger using foil transfer. If you’ve never used foils before, this is a perfect first project—quick, forgiving, and so satisfying when you peel back that foil ✨
Materials You’ll Need
- “Thankful” wooden cutout (or any similar wood cutout)
- Bondago Black Paint & Primer (or any all-in-one paint)
- Foil Adhesive (for foil transfer)
- Copper Bark Foil (or any foil you love)
- Foam brush
- Stiff scrub brush
- Final Coat (semi-gloss varnish)
Step 1: Base Coat the Cutout
Start by base coating your cutout with Bondago Black, a paint + primer in one (great coverage and adhesion on wood). Stir well before using, especially if the paint has been sitting.
Jenn’s tip: Use a pouncing/dabbing motion with a foam brush. This helps you avoid getting paint on the edges and keeps the finish nice and even.
Let the paint dry 30–60 minutes before moving on.
Step 2: Apply Foil Adhesive
Next, apply Foil Adhesive to the surface using a foam brush. Just like the paint, pounce it on to control the adhesive and prevent it from running over the edges.
If you want a smoother finish, gently brush parallel to the surface after pouncing to soften any texture.
Let the adhesive dry until it turns clear and tacky (about 30–60 minutes).
This step matters—fully dry + tacky = the best transfer.
Step 3: Prep & Place the Foil
Jenn uses Copper Bark Foil for this project. If your foil curls, try her quick trick: back-roll it to help it lay flat before placing it on the surface.
Place the foil transfer side down / pretty side up on the tacky adhesive.
Step 4: Transfer the Foil
Use a stiff scrub brush to press and rub the foil firmly into the surface. You’ll start to see the design appear as it transfers.
Go slowly as you peel back the foil to check your work:
- If any areas didn’t transfer, lay the foil back down
- Scrub again until you’re happy with the coverage
Step 5: Seal & Protect
Once the transfer is complete, seal the design with Final Coat (semi-gloss) using a wipe-on technique. Jenn recommends a sponge applicator to spread it evenly.
Let it dry for about 10 minutes, then add another coat if needed.
Final Result
You’ll end up with a beautiful foiled “thankful” door hanger that looks high-end but is easy enough for beginners. Metallic foils add a rich shine that instantly elevates simple wood cutouts—perfect for seasonal décor (or gifts!).
