Create a Stunning “Thankful” Cutout Door Hanger with Foil Transfer
In this step-by-step guide, Jenn Ferguson from Artistic Painting Studio transforms a simple "thankful" wooden cutout from Hobby Lobby into a stunning autumn door hanger using foil transfer techniques.
Materials Needed:
Thankful cutout (or similar wooden cutout)
Bondago Black Paint & Primer (or any all-in-one paint)
Foil Adhesive from Artsyville Embellishments
Foam brush
Scrub brush
Final Coat (Semi-gloss varnish)
Step 1: Base Coating with Bondago Paint
Start by base coating the cutout using Bondago Black, a paint and primer all-in-one. This paint is ideal for wood projects as it provides great adhesion and opacity in one coat, eliminating the need for separate priming. Stir the paint thoroughly before use to avoid separation, especially if it's been sitting for a while.
Using a foam brush, Jenn recommends a pouncing technique to avoid getting paint on the cutout's edges. Pouncing also ensures a consistent finish and avoids paint buildup. Once the base coat is complete, let it dry for 30-60 minutes to ensure the next layer applies smoothly.
Step 2: Applying Foil Adhesive
Next, apply foil adhesive to the surface. This adhesive, specifically designed for foil transfers, dries to a tacky finish. Jenn suggests using a foam brush again to apply the adhesive, ensuring it's pounced onto the surface, just like the paint. This technique helps control the amount of adhesive applied and prevents it from running down the edges. For a smoother finish, after pouncing, use the brush parallel to the surface and smooth out any texture.
Allow the adhesive to dry until it becomes clear and tacky (around 30-60 minutes). Ensuring it’s fully dry is crucial for a successful foil transfer.
Step 3: Preparing and Applying the Foil
Jenn uses Copper Bark foil for this project, and since foils can be curly, she demonstrates a useful trick—back-rolling the foil. This helps it lay flat and be easier to control when placing it onto the cutout. Carefully place the foil, transfer side up, on the tacky surface.
Step 4: Transferring the Foil
Using a stiff scrub brush, press and rub the foil onto the cutout. As you scrub, the foil adheres to the tacky areas, and you’ll start to see the design emerge. It’s important to go slowly while peeling back the foil to check the transfer. If any areas are missing, lay the foil back down and scrub more until the design is fully transferred.
Step 5: Sealing the Design
Once the foil transfer is complete, Jenn finishes the project by applying a semi-gloss final coat using a wipe-on technique. She recommends using a sponge applicator to spread the varnish evenly, ensuring the foil is sealed and protected. Allow the varnish to dry for about 10 minutes, and add additional coats if needed.
Final Thoughts
The result is a beautifully foiled "thankful" door hanger that’s perfect for fall décor. The use of metallic foils adds a sophisticated shine to an otherwise simple cutout. This project is not only easy to follow but is a great way to personalize your seasonal décor with a touch of sparkle!
