APS Hat Foil Process Guide: How to Apply Transfer Foils to Hats Successfully

Creating custom foiled hats is one of the most exciting and creative ways to use transfer foils. Whether you are working on baseball caps, wide-brim hats, straw hats, canvas hats, or fashion accessories, using the correct process is the key to achieving long-lasting, professional-looking results.

At Artistic Painting Studio, we have been teaching and creating foiled hat projects for over 10 years. During that time, we have tested countless techniques, products, and application methods to develop the process we now confidently recommend.

This guide will walk you through our current APS Hat Foil Process so you can create with confidence and success.

Best Process for Applying Foil to Hats

Step 1: Apply Bondago as Your Base Coat

The first step when foiling hats is to properly prepare and seal the surface.

We recommend applying one coat of Bondago to the hat surface before applying foil adhesive.

Why Bondago Matters

  • Helps seal porous surfaces
  • Creates a smoother application surface
  • Prevents foil adhesion from soaking into the fabric
  • Helps prevent uneven absorption into fabrics

Recommended Dry Time

Allow Bondago to dry for 24 hours before moving to the next step.

Additional Tips

  • One coat is usually enough
  • Thick or heavily textured fabrics may require two coats
  • Allow each coat to dry fully before applying another

Step 2: Apply ArtsSyVille Foil Adhesive

Once the Bondago has fully cured, apply a coat of ArtsSyVille Foil Adhesive.

This adhesive is designed to create the tack needed for successful foil transfer on hats.

Recommended Dry Time

Allow the adhesive to dry for 24 hours.

Adhesive Tips for Hats

  • One coat is typically enough
  • If the surface does not feel tacky enough, apply a second coat
  • The adhesive will remain tacky and never dry beyond a firm tack

Taking the time to allow the adhesive to cure properly helps create cleaner foil transfers.

Step 3: Transfer Your Foil Design

Now comes the fun part — applying your APS transfer foil!

You can use:

  • Metallic foils
  • Holographic foils
  • Patterned foils
  • Transparent foils
  • Specialty finish foils

Apply your foil to create custom:

  • Fashion hats
  • Boutique hats
  • Western hats
  • Baseball caps
  • Designer accessories
  • Handmade gifts

For best results, use firm pressure and thoroughly scrub the foil to achieve a clean transfer.

Step 4: Seal Your Foiled Hat with a Topcoat

Sealing your project is an important final step that helps protect the foil and improve durability.

Option 1: Flexible Topcoat

Our recommended option for most hats.

Application Instructions

  • Apply 1–2 coats
  • Allow approximately 24 hours between coats for best results

This topcoat helps maintain flexibility while protecting the foil finish.

Option 2: Final Coat (If You Still Have It)

Some customers may still have our previous Final Coat product.

Application Instructions

  • Apply 3 very thin layers
  • Allow 20–30 minutes between coats
  • Ensure each layer is dry before applying the next

Thin applications work best and help avoid disturbing the foil finish.

Why Dry Times Matter When Foiling Hats

One of the most common reasons projects fail is rushing the drying process.

At APS, we provide recommended dry times that are designed to work successfully across different climates, temperatures, and humidity levels.

While some creators may experience success with shorter dry times, our recommendations are intended to provide the most consistent results possible.

Allowing products to fully cure helps:

  • Improve foil adhesion
  • Reduce peeling
  • Increase durability
  • Create cleaner transfers
  • Prevent frustration during application

Important Note About Older Hat Videos

Artistic Painting Studio has been creating foiling tutorials and hat videos for over a decade.

Because our techniques and products have evolved over time, some older videos may show methods that differ from our current recommended process.

Please Keep in Mind:

  • Older videos are still great for inspiration and design ideas
  • Written instructions have been updated where possible
  • Older tutorials may not reflect our latest methods or products

We always recommend following our most current written instructions for the best results.

New APS Topcoat Currently in Development

We are excited to share that we are currently developing a brand-new APS Topcoat specifically designed to improve durability and performance for foiled surfaces.

This project has been in development for the past 6 months, and we cannot wait to share it with you.

Once finalized, we will also be filming a completely updated hat foiling tutorial video using our newest recommended process.
