Step-by-step help from Jenn and the APS team: how to foil, how to use decorative rollers and stencils, and projects to try next.

Foil questions

What is transfer foil?

A thin metallic layer on a clear sheet. It sticks wherever there's adhesive, so you decide where it goes, from a full transfer to a partial one. On fabric, an iron-on adhesive and heat do the transfer.

Where can I use it?

On just about anything: furniture, walls, terracotta pots, tumblers, hats, shoes and roller skates. For clothing and fabric, choose a foil marked “Works on fabric” on its product page.

Does all of the foil transfer?

About 90 to 95 percent of it does, so a little of the base color shows through. Paint the base in a color that goes with your foil.

Which adhesive should I use?

For wood, furniture, walls and most hard surfaces, use Foil Adhesive. For clothing, use FABRIC Foil Adhesive. The fabric guide above covers the other fabric adhesives.
